Inis Oirr Residency

Deadline | 18th December 2018 |  Inis Oirr IRELAND

ISACS is delighted to launch an open call for a 4-week residency on the island of Inis Oirr, Aran Islands, Atlantic Ocean, Galway, Ireland.

This residency is being offered by the Áras Eanna Arts Centre on Inis Oirr and with the support of the Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network towards the FRESH STREET#3 event in partnership with Circostrada and Galway 2020.

What is this residency about: The residency is aimed towards the creation of a site responsive piece of work, belonging to the people and the island of Inis Oírr. The piece will be presented as a work in progress during the FRESH STREET#3 international conference on the 23rd May.

Who can apply: We are looking for artists from all disciplines and genres wishing to work outdoors on a site responsive project, directly tied to the people and the island of Inis Oírr. Applications from national and international artists are welcome. To find out more about the unique Inis Oírr visit the Aran Islands website.

When is the Residency: Monday 6th May – Friday 31st May 2019

The Space: The residency is in the outdoors on the island of Inis Oírr. The successful candidate will receive living quarters in the Áras Éanna Arts centre. This consists of an open plan room with a double bed, a futon and a kitchen area. In addition, a small studio is provided overlooking the Atlantic Ocean for planning, thinking and creative process. The optimum number of people that this space can accommodate is two, with a maximum of three in the living quarters.

The Arts centre also boasts a small 70 seater black box theatre which has a renowned acoustic sound among musicians and sound artists. This space may be made available for rehearsal/ planning in the event of its requirement.

Áras Éanna Arts Centre provides a hub for artists to gather and present work with the people of the island. It aims to support and encourage indigenous craft, culture, story-telling and expression.

What do we offer the artist:

In addition to the use of the space outlined above, the ISACS and Áras Éanna team offer the following:

– local knowledge, contacts, introductions and technical support from the team at Áras Éanna

– an artistic mentor specialised in rural areas to support the selected artist

– marketing, promotion and media through ISACS, CircostradaGalway 2020 and the Áras Éanna networks (mailings, social media, local and national press etc)

– a stipend towards the total travel expenses and per diems will be made available upon proof of expenditure

– production costs may also be negotiated according to the scale and ambition of the proposed work

Practical Considerations: This residency is on a remote island in the Atlantic Ocean, access to the island is by boat or by a very small plane and is weather dependent. Once on the island transport is by foot, bicycle or horse and trap. There are a small grocery shop, some bars and small restaurants available in the village near the quay. Áras Éanna Arts centre is a 15-minute walk to the village.

Criteria: Applicants must submit:

  • A full detailed proposal outlining ideas/vision/desire to create work within and with Inis Oírr and its people along with a full production budget.

In addition to this, applicants must submit the following:

  • CV of the company/ of all the artists involved in the project
  • 3 images of recent work
  • at least one short video of recent work

Successful applicants must demonstrate a strong track record in creating work in the outdoors, in a participatory process and in engagement. A familiarity with Inis Oírr will be an advantage.

Selection Panel: Dara Mc Gee – Artistic Director of Áras Éanna Arts Centre, Maggie Clarke – Member of FRESH STREET workgroup, Craig Flaherty – Cultural Producer | Galway 2020

Our Plans:

Our plans for FRESH STREET#3 participants on the island, involve collective reflection, presence, time and participation in creative work. The work created through the residency ideally would have a resonance and a relevance to Inis Oírr.

In a world where we are all time poor and bombarded with constant information, we feel that authentic experience of place and self is less and less often truly felt. This requires creating opportunities to make space and to acknowledge the value of doing so.

We envision the creation of site-specific work responding to and with the place and the community.

The opportunity to participate in an artistic residency in partnership with the Áras Éanna for the month of May, would allow artists to really experience and feel the location for which they are responding to. It aims to encourage, stimulate and support the creation of an authentic original place and people responsive work.
